Post Nordic Mythology
So... I'd like to learn some facts about the Nordic Mythology, but I found none books that I can buy here in my city about it. I guess that some of you here know more about it than I do. I'd like to start a little discussion about this stuff so I could get to know it better. Can anyone at least give me some basic information about it?

P.S. I wanted also to make a poll about which mythology you most like, but I'll do it tomorrow, because currently I don't have enough time. ;)

Well I might write a lot more stuff here but I will start with some simple things.

History: Nordic Mythology was at it's greatest during the Viking era and it ended when Christianity came and took over.
There are lots of myths that were lost and the ones that remained have contradictions and all kinds of logical problems but thats the way we like them. The reason behind this is the way these stories were spread around. As stories told to children and by bards singing the ancient ballads of old. So many creators and many who altered them. The myths that we have today were written down in Iceland but a lot of them wasn't written since no one thought that they could possibly disappear.

Next time I will step into the actual myths and if you have any certain requests (gods, the Creation of the World and the Worlds end) go ahead and ask for them.

I know this basic information about the mythology itself. But I'd like something more about, just like you said, "gods, the Creation of the World and the Worlds end" and so. :D

P.S. I LOVE Vikings and everything that's their, so the mythology too!

Post Re: Nordic Mythology
Well writing the names in their English forms is going to give me a bit of trouble with some annoying letters I don't have in my keyboard but here goes.

In the beginning there was just endless fires of Muspellheimr down below and the ice and frost of Niflheimr which later became one of the lands of the dead (funny to think that usually Hell is thought of as a hot place but the vikings knew better  ).
Well the fires melted some of the ice and so water formed a ball between these two realms. (The emptiness between was called Ginnungagap)
Then somehow two great beings were born out of the water. Audhumla and Ymir. Audhumla was a gigantic cow and Ymir was a huge giant. Ymir drank Audhumlas Milk and while he slept two other giants were born in his underarms from his sweat. Then his legs also mated but I don't recall what came out of that (possibly another giant). Audhumla was placed so that she could only lick the icecles of Niflheimr for nutrition. While licking the salt in middle of the ice to form a manshaped being she also created the first of the gods.
There were wto types of gods (or god families). Most of them were the powerful Æsir and some were Vanir (more on the war between them later). The creation of Vanir is not known but out that salt statue came to be the first god. He did nothing important and neither did his son but his grandsons came to be really important. They were Vili, Ve and the last one is usually known as Odin but Odin (or Oden) had a ton of names that were all listed in one of the myths (about 100 of them I think) Vili and Ve were also quite unimportant throught the stories but have some minor parts in some of them.
Then Odin and his brothers for some strange reason decided to tear Ymir apart and murdered him and so Ymris blood spread all over the watery ball in Ginnungagap. then they used Ymirs body to shape the world. His bones are stone, his flesh is earth, salty water is his blood, 2 stars in the sky are his eyes that the gods tossed there as the token of victory, clouds are his brains drifting around and the sky is the inside of his skull that somehow covers all the nine worlds (It is held by 4 dwarves named North, East, South and West). Black Elves (better known as Dwarves) evolved from the maggots eating his flesh. Sun and the moon are parts of the fires of Musspelheimr taken there by Odin to light the sky.

Now thats all for today.
