I just like metal for variety of styles and feelings they represent.
You can find artistic prog or beatiful symphonic pieces and when you feel like it you can have the ugliest music on earth.

Words of wisdom

I repeat: Oh, well...
This "You can find artistic prog or beatiful symphonic pieces and when you feel like it you can have the ugliest music on earth." is true, but no one was talking about that...

OK, to make it more clear: metal music is about music, not about a lifestyle (or at least I think that's what Mayhem meant).

YES YES YES YES YES!!!

That's what I'm always trying to explain to my friends.

Because the ones who listen to metal think that if they like that music, that needs to be their style, way of life, clothing, that they need to hang out only with people who like it and have to listen to every famous metal band, no matter what's their real own opinion about it... Everything, just metal, metal, metal.

Yet the ones who don't listen to it think that it needs to be my lifestyle, and that's pretty annoying. They think I need to wear something black always (the most time I do, but not because of music but because I like that style more than something... colourful), so when I wear some other colour they look at me like I've killed a man. Than, when I say that some non-metal song isn't bad, they think I'm gone crazy. And some more things like that...

P.S. And they also mix death, black and trash metal with the ones I listen to mostly: power and progressive, and they think that every metal band sounds like... for example Children Of Bodom, Slayer or something, so they don't even want to hear anything from... for example HammerFall or Dream Theater. Just because they don't like these first bands. That's even more annoying. I mean, of course there are people who really like Slayer for example, but most of them listen to it because they're popular among the "metal fans" (there's a difference between metal fans and metal music fans), that's why I took that example. And I think that's because the ones who's "lifestyle" is metal, they NEED to listen to everything, not only to what they like.

So, I agree with you guys!! :D

And this is a very important, bad, thing for the metal music... (Not the bands, the mix which some people do)

+1
I just managed to make my best friend try to listen to something I like... You know what was her reaction?

"Oh my God, this is great!!! I have to have some of these songs!!! I never really realised that this is metal... It's more something... between metal and...
She said that for Dream Theater and Queensryche. I said: "it's pure, progressive metal and nothing else. Nothing "between"."
She just said:
"I thought that metal has to be more.... "strong", "loud", "heavy"... (I don't know how to explain, but I think you know what she really meant. I think it was mostly about the vocals in these and those bands)

That's where I felt angry and happy at the same time. Angry because she said that she thought all metal bands are the same, and happy because I convinced someone that it hasn't to be that way! :D

On the other hand, I said to my friend to listen some metal songs and he said to me:
-No I don't want, because one time I heared one song and the voice was so death and terrible and I don't want to listen metal any more...

So?? Another one who believes in the mix...

No, hell, NOOO!!!!!! It's just... sad, it's TRAGIC... How many more metal fans would we have if there were no these "stereotypes"... :(

Just tell your friend just to try listening to another metal song, but one YOU tell him to hear!! :D And if you succeed... :D

I wouldn't stuff the music all up other people's throats (though I used to be like that, but most of the time it was just to annoy those people). It's a way more clever thing to do when you're at your own place having some friends around, you play some good and melodic sounding metal music in the background, and make people curious about it. You can get the attention on the music by for example going to your PC or whatever and change the music. That's how sneaky I am.
