Well I think he kinda lost his awesomeness by growing them. It's just too much, plus he has to loose his cape because it looks really weird, a cape and wings.

Please Sam, relieve Hector from his wings! He's way cooler without them!

I don't think the wings matter if he just looks cool.
And he can look cool with the wings but also without them.
So it is not about the wings it is about the whole image.
